Iguanas, canals and coral rock
The Coral Gables Waterway cuts through the middle of the city, and iguanas live along the whole length of it. If your yard backs a canal, or sits a couple of blocks off one in Cocoplum or Gables by the Sea, you already know what ends up in the water.
Iguana droppings carry salmonella. That is not a line to scare you, it is the reason we do not just scoop and move on. Debris comes out first, then we hold chlorine high enough, long enough, to actually sanitise what came with it. Skimming alone leaves water that looks fine while the sanitiser does nothing. If your pool has a tanning ledge or shallow steps, those get brushed by hand, because that is where the mess sits and the circulation is weakest.
A lot of Gables pools sit on coral rock or old keystone decks. That stone is porous and holds organic material, so what blows off the deck brings more with it than it would off smooth concrete. We brush the waterline tile every visit for the same reason.
The canopy is the other half of the job
Old Cutler, Hardee, Alhambra Circle. Those oaks and banyans are why people buy in the Gables, and they are also why your skimmer basket fills in four days instead of ten. Live oak drops in spring here, not fall, and it drops for weeks. Add a mango in the back yard and you have fruit in the water through June.
Most historic Gables homes never got a screen enclosure, and plenty of owners would not want one. That is fine. It just means the pool is an open catch basin, and open pools under heavy canopy sit at the upper end of the weekly range because there is more to pull out every week. We would rather tell you that on the phone than quote low and start adding fees in month three.
What we do differently on this route
We carry a leaf rake, not just a flat skimmer. A flat net is useless against wet oak litter. We check the pump pot before we leave, every visit, because a basket packed with leaves is how motors burn out. On canal properties we test free chlorine before anything else, so we know what we walked into rather than guessing at the end.
