A neighbourhood mostly rebuilt after Andrew
Cutler Bay took the eye wall in 1992 and a large share of the housing stock went up or got rebuilt after that. For pools that means something practical: cages, pads and plumbing here are generally newer than what we see in the Gables or the Grove, and enclosures were built to a tougher code.
Newer does not mean maintenance free. Pools built in the mid nineties are now hitting the age where the original pump motor, the original filter grids and the original salt cell have all aged out around the same time. We log filter pressure weekly so a climbing number gives you a heads up instead of a surprise, and we check salt cell output rather than trusting the panel light.
The canals to Black Point
Saga Bay and Lakes by the Bay sit on a canal network that runs out to Black Point, and that network is full of iguanas. Same routine as anywhere else on the water: solids out first, chlorine to shock level and held there, then brush the shallow end and the steps by hand. The droppings settle where the water is slowest, and that is never the middle of the pool.
Because the lots here are more open than Pinecrest, wind matters more than trees. On breezy weeks we spend as much time on the surface as on the floor, and after a dry stretch you will see a fine grit on the bottom that came off the roads and the fill, not off a tree.
Hurricane prep, the short version
Do not drain the pool. It is the single most common mistake and it is the expensive one, because a drained shell can pop out of saturated ground. Lower the water a few inches, cut power to the pump at the breaker, and drop the patio furniture in rather than leaving it loose.
Take the skimmer baskets and the loose cleaner out. Do not add a bunch of chlorine ahead of the storm hoping to bank it, because the rain will dilute it anyway and the sun will burn what is left. Afterward, clear the pad, restore power, filter around the clock for a day or two, and shock it once. Water will look bad for 48 hours and that is normal.
